Christchurch City Council puts $2m into biking part

The Christchurch City Council is to contribute $2 million towards a $20m mountain biking park in the Port Hills.

Cyclists will be saved the tough job of cycling up the hill courtesy of a chairlift close to 2km long - which is being touted as the longest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Christchurch Adventure Park will also feature rock climbing and, after a second stage of development, a gravity-powered rollercoaster.

The council hoped the park would attract more tourists to the city, which has been struggling to get back on visitors' itineraries since the earthquakes.

The project would generate economic benefits for the region of $150m, backers estimated.
