Two dead after separate train accidents

Two people have been killed after they were hit by trains in separate incidents today.

In the first case, 25-year-old Brent Richard Lowe was hit and killed by a train on the Palmerston North side of Bunnythorpe village at about 4am today.

The Palmerston North man's death is still being investigated, and has been referred to the Coroner.

The second train fatality occurred when a 35-year-old man was struck by a south-bound freight train on the tracks at the Mana Marina area, north of Wellington, at about 11.40am.

As a result, the main trunk line was closed between Porirua and Paekikariki.
