Another southerly buster

11:13 pm on 24 March 2010

Marlborough, Wellington, Wairarapa and Manawatu bore the brunt of another southerly storm on Wednesday.

The MetService earlier issued a severe weather warning for Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa, with wind gusts of up to 130 km/h in exposed areas.

Western parts of New Zealand from Fiordland to Northland can expect heavy and thundery showers to continue until Thursday.

The MetService also warned people to be wary of rapidly rising rivers and streams in the Tararua Ranges, because of heavy rain, with thunder, on Wednesday.

Flights to and from Wellington mostly faced only minor delays, although one plane had to turn back to Auckland because of the wind.
