Expert criticised over keyhole surgery

8:50 pm on 25 March 2010

An unnamed gynaecologist has been faulted for carrying out major procedure on a patient without first obtaining their consent.

Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson, released a report on the case on Thursday.

Mr Paterson says the gynaecologist saw a 29-year-old woman with suspected endometriosis in 2004.

The specialist found during laparoscopy, or keyhole surgery, at an unnamed private hospital that the patient had a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

During the surgery, the gynaecologist drilled the patient's ovaries, but Mr Paterson says the woman is adamant she never consented to that part of the procedure.

He says a note provided later by the gynaecologist, suggesting consent was given, was unreliable.

Mr Paterson has asked her to apologise and review her practice.
