Emergency services were called to Hot Water Beach at around 5.30pm.

Police said a middle aged man was given CPR but could not be saved and died at the scene.

Two others have been taken to hospital with one in a serious condition and another with minor injuries.

Police said they would be investigating the death on behalf of the coroner.

On Friday, a 53-year-old man drowned while body surfing at Long Beach in the Bay of Islands. Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to save him.

And the body of off-duty lifeguard Hamish Rieger was found today at Mt Maunganui, after he was swept out to sea on Saturday.

A large wave washed the 17-year-old, who was with friends, off rocks at the end of Moturiki Island yesterday evening.
