Ferry fare 'forcing' residents to go without food

Waiheke Island residents say they are having to sacrifice meals as they struggle to cope with the increased cost of commuting to Auckland.

Ferry company Fullers put up its fare earlier in September because of increasing fuel costs.

At a public meeting on Sunday, Fullers was told the $44 rise for a monthly pass has forced some people to eat just once a day, and others to move off the island.

Sheryl Lyall says it is costing her dearly. "I had to make choices if I ate or paid phone and power, and I haven't paid my phone and power bills. I've been eating one meal a day, it's often rice - real basic."

Fullers say the rise is justified, as fuel costs have gone up nearly 70% in the past 12 months.

Auckland Regional Council says it could possibly subsidise the fare increases, but that would push up rates for everyone, including those who do no use the ferry.

All parties are set to discuss the issue further over coming weeks.
