CYF reviewing Destiny foster care after sex charge

7:06 pm on 29 March 2010

Child, Youth and Family (CYF) is reviewing foster home arrangements with Destiny Church members in Taranaki after an alleged indecent assault on a foster child.

Joshua Edmonds, 29, is charged with indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl fostered by a Destiny family at a gathering of churchgoers last September.

His mother, Destiny pastor Robyn Edmonds, is the Taranaki manager of the Open Home Foundation, which arranged the foster home. His father Lee is also a Destiny pastor.

CYF says it removed the girl from the home as soon as it knew of the allegation.

The Open Home Foundation's arrangements with nine Taranaki Destiny families will be reviewed within three weeks.

Destiny Church says it will not review its foster home work in Taranaki, despite the accusation.

Destiny spokesperson Richie Lewis says church leaders are meeting with the pastors to check on practices with the Open Home Foundation.

However, Mr Lewis says the arrangement has been in place for some time without incident and he sees no need to review fostering.

The Open Home Foundation says it will assess whether Mrs Edmonds should be overseeing foster home placements.

Chief executive Martin Russell says there have been numerous discussions over her conflict of interest in overseeing foster placements while also working for the church.

He says it is now prudent to have another look at whether she can continue in both roles.
