Wellington bus service to resume on Friday

Bus services in Wellington affected by a pay dispute will return to normal on Friday.

About 50,000 passengers were affected throughout Thursday after bus operator GO Wellington imposed a lockout on members of the Wellington Tramways Union after they went on strike for one hour the previous day.

The Manufacturing and Construction Workers Union supported drivers on Wednesday after workers refused to refuel buses.

GO Wellington says negotiations with the Tramways Union will resume on Friday.

The company had offered a pay increase of 7%, but the union wants 8% to 12%.

The Tramways Union welcomed the lifting of the lockout, but says its drivers will not stop their campaign for better pay, and further disruptions cannot be ruled out.

About 50 drivers were on the picket line at the company's depot in Kilbirnie on Thursday.

Wellington Combined Taxis says its job numbers have jumped by a quarter since Wednesday, with an extra 100 cars rostered on to cover peak hours.
