Vodka and War Memorial not a good mix

4:16 pm on 30 March 2010

A veterans' group and the National War Memorial Advisory Council have condemned a stunt that projected a vodka company's sign on to the memorial.

The 42 Below sign was projected onto the side of the carillon as part of its cocktail world cup event held in Wellington on Saturday.

National War Memorial Advisory Council chairman David Ledson says the company did not seek permission to project its sign on the building.

He is not sure how long it was up there but says the council is annoyed at the stunt, which was clearly in contrast to what the memorial stands for.

Mr Ledson says people should respect the memorial, which represents the sacrifices of New Zealanders.

The Returned Services Association says the stunt was inappropriate.

Apology for 'oversight'

The company has apologised for what it calls an oversight.

Marketing manager Dion Nash says it was not a promotional stunt, but a misunderstanding, and staff feel they have let the country down.

Mr Nash says the company will send a full apology to the memorial advisory council and the Minister of Veterans Affairs.

National War Memorial curator Paul Riley says he has spoken with 42 Below and believes it was a genuine misunderstanding.
