A West Coast couple has got offside with their neighbours all because they play RNZ Concert while they tinker away in their garage.

Janice Lee and Edgar Rochwalksi enjoy listening to the station, but a neighbour has complained about the volume saying it's too noisy and the sound is bouncing off the tin garage.

The couple, aged in their 70s, say their music is not loud.

The dispute made it all the way from Greymouth to the pages of the Sunday Star Times.

The couple have been hit with a $500 noise control notice which Janice Lee said they were appealing.

"We have it just loud enough so we have something good to listen to while we're working, doing different things in the garage and yeah it's not loud."

Ms Lee said if the neighbours did not like the music she turned it down or off.
