Gang leader gives up patch to support youth centre

6:10 am on 1 October 2008

A Black Power leader in Waitara is handing back his patch to strengthen the case for a youth centre the gang wants to set up.

Black Power lieutenant Kevin Moore is leaving the gang tonight after 30 years to show his good intent.

The move comes as some community leaders in the Taranaki town say there is no support for the idea.

The gang says it wants to steer children away from jail, but police fear it will be a recruitment centre for Black Power members.

Two community board members, both Waitara retailers, say they have not heard anyone voice support for the idea.

Joe Rauner says he is open to hearing more about the youth centre, but people are wondering if drug money is involved.

Ken Bedford says he hopes it will not become a breeding ground for delinquents.
