An Auckland college student will join Prime Minister John Key's official delegation to Gallipoli for ANZAC Day ceremonies after winning a national speech competition.

The inaugural National Bank RSA Cyril Basset VC Speech Competition was held at the National War Memorial in Wellington on Thursday.

Eight regional finalists delivered speeches on the theme of remembering fallen soldiers of 20th-century conflicts, including both world wars and Vietnam.

The top honour went to Meaghan Li from Macleans College in Auckland.

Meaghan Li, whose family immigrated to New Zealand from China, says she was humbled by her win.

She receives the trip to Anzac Cove, a laptop computer and a camera to record the experience, and $1000 in spending money.
