An Otago University student who imported ecstasy to feed his drug addiction has been jailed for five years.
James Edward Hughes admitted five charges including importing and supplying ecstasy, importing a psychoactive substance and having it for supply and possession of cocaine.
Last year, the 25-year-old imported 280g of ecstasy, on 10 separate occasions, and a psychoactive substance known as N-bomb.
He sold the ecstasy powder in 800 capsules for up to $50 each, netting more than $100,000.
He also sold tabs of N-bomb for $20 each.
Hughes' lawyer, Chris Tennet, said drug addiction fuelled the offending and his client had been drug free since returning to live with his family in Wellington.
But Crown prosecutor Seamus Woods said Hughes used neighbouring addresses and fictitious names to avoid detection.
Judge Tompkins said during sentencing that, despite knowing he was harming himself and his friends, Hughes couldn't stop.
