Scrub fire destroys 25 hectares near Rakaia

A major scrub fire is burning near Little Rakaia in mid-Canterbury.

On Saturday 25 hectares of scrub had burned beside the Rakaia River, and high winds were making the fire difficult to contain.

The fire service and the Department of Conservation were at the scene, assessing whether the nearby settlement was in danger.

The Service says it is dangerous for fire crews to enter the bush and they are trying to contain the fire from the outside.
