Canterbury firefighters have contained two fires, which were fanned by strong winds in the region on Saturday.

The first fire near Little Rakaia, south of Dunsandel, burnt across 25ha of scrub alongside the Rakaia River.

Helicopters and fire crews have been stood down at Little River on Banks Peninsula, where 8ha of seedling pine and bush were ablaze.

Crews from the Christchurch City Council will spend the night monitoring the scene.
