Capital to host wearable arts show for next four years

Wellington will host the World of Wearable Arts Awards event for another four years after securing a contract worth $40 million to the city.

Wellington City Council's first four-year contract to host the arts and fashion show was set to end after next year, but will now run through till 2012.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast says she does not believe the show's organisers were negotiating offers from any other cities.

Ms Prendergast says the show, which began in Nelson in 1987, has become an established Wellington event.

She says the show itself will stay much the same, but the council hopes to expand it into additional smaller events around the city.

Ms Prendergast will not reveal how much the contract has cost the council, saying such information is commercially sensitive and could affect future bids.
