High winds hit Wellington and Wairarapa

High winds and rain are hitting Wellington.

MetService says a cold front is crossing the upper South Island and much of the North Island, bringing wind and rain.

MetService says wind speeds of up to 159km per hour have been recorded at Mount KauKau (height: 445 metres).

The was power outage in the suburb of Miramar after trees were blown onto lines.

State Highway Two over the Rimutaka Hills is closed until at least midday.

Winds have also overturned a truck near Masterton.

PowerCo says there's also a number of outages in the Wairarapa region.

Winds of up to 120km an hour are forecast between Auckland and Nelson.

However, MetService says they will lose pace as they head further north.

There could be heavy rain in places for short periods.

Further south: up to 8cm of snow was expected to fall on the Milford Road by 9am. The forecast is for more snow on Tuesday night.
