1:09 pm on 3 April 2016

A shot was fired during a robbery at the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch, police say.

They said two heavily disguised men wearing gloves and carrying shotguns demanded money from bar staff at the hotel just after midnight.

A staff member was bludgeoned with the butt of a gun when he tried to grab one of the men.

The robber then fired the shotgun, hitting a toilet door, before both men fled with an unknown amount of money.

The police said the staff member received medical attention at the scene.
