NZ soldiers exchange fire with Afghan insurgents

4:00 pm on 10 April 2010

A patrol of New Zealand soldiers in Afghanistan has been attacked by a group of insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades.

The soldiers, from New Zealand's Provinicial Reconstruction Team, returned fire during the attack, which happened early on Friday afternoon, Afghanistan time, in the north-east of Bamyan province.

The Defence Force says there were no casualties. It says air support for the patrol was activated, and other New Zealand patrols came to help.

Defence Force personnel, along with the Afghan national police, have since secured the area and normal patrols are continuing in Bamyan province.
