Endangered species staff feel under-resourced

6:50 pm on 10 April 2010

New research has found that Department of Conservation staff who deal with endangered species are unhappy with the resources available to them.

Having surveyed 12 of the department's 13 regional offices, Massey University scientist Mark Seabrook-Davison says staff complained of insufficient funding, staff shortages and poor communication between conservancies.

As a result, Dr Seabrook-Davison says, they have been unable to adequately protect the vast majority of endangered species.

He's calling for the Government to revise the Wildlife Act and intoduce legislation similar to that in Australia, where the protection of endangered species is legally mandated.
