Tourist driver sentenced for motorcyclist's death

A Singapore man who drove a rental car on the wrong side of the road, killing a motorcyclist near Oamaru last year, has been sentenced to two months home detention and 150 hours of community work.

Wei Lew was driving the car on the wrong side of State Highway 1 near Waianakarua in November last year when his vehicle struck two oncoming cars and two motorbikes.

Motueka motorcyclist Craig Chambers was killed in the crash and three people were seriously injured, including Lew's partner.

The 30-year-old had been in the country for nine days when the accident happened.

He pleaded guilty in April to aggravated careless driving causing the death and injuries.
