Govt to underwrite Dunedin stadium shortfall

Otago Regional Council has confirmed its funding for a new stadium in Dunedin, by six votes to four.

The council is contributing $37.5 million to the $200 million project after being satisfied that a private sector funding shortfall of $15 million will be met.

Chairman Stephen Cairns advised council members on Tuesday that the Crown would underwrite the $15 million.

Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin hopes the Government's offer will be a stimulus for private funders who are yet to commit to the stadium.

He says any terms and conditions attached to Government support have yet to be discussed.
