Two diving deaths at Hawke's Bay

A person has died while trying to rescue another diver at a beach in the Hawke's Bay.

Police were called to the beach near the Pourerere Coast at about 3.30pm today after a diver failed to resurface.

Police and search and rescue volunteers began searching and found the diver's body at about 5pm.

Forty minutes later a person who was part of the search also died.

A rescue helicopter was called and medical treatment was provided, but police said the person was unable to be revived.
