Fishermen call for quota review

6:32 am on 18 April 2010

Some inshore fishermen are calling for a review of the system that governs the way the industry harvests seafood.

They say there has been a big decrease in the number of fishing vessels in operation since the Quota Management System was introduced in 1986.

While its key principle of preserving fish stocks has been effective, the fishermen say the associated costs have made it difficult for them to make a decent living.

The Federation of Commercial Fishermen says a contributory factor is the high and unpredictable annual catch entitlement prices that have to be paid to quota owners.
