Homes evacuated after Wellington gas leak

Contractors have fixed a gas leak in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville that forced the evacuation of six homes and left nearly 1400 without power.

The rupturing of the main at the corner of Burgess Rd and and Chesterton St about 4pm was linked to roadworks in the area.

Fire Service shift manager Mike Wanoa said six houses in Arthur Carman St and Burgess Rd were evacuated after explosive gas levels were detected.

A cordon was put up, power was turned off and gas contractors were sent to the scene to fix the leak, he said.

Power was restored to residents about 7.30pm.
