Minister sacks Otepopo school board

Continuing tension over the running of a small school in North Otago has led to its board of trustees being dismissed.

Education Minister Anne Tolley dissolved the board of trustees of Otepopo School on Thursday after a report by the Education Review Office criticised teaching standards.

Ms Tolley says children have been removed from the school by their familes, including some board members. The roll is down to 13 this year from 41 in 2004.

She says there have been ongoing tensions within the community.

Ms Tolley says a commissioner is needed to restore teaching standards and community confidence in the school.
