Union wants batons for fisheries officers

11:42 am on 3 November 2008

The National Union for Public Employees wants fishery officers to be armed with batons and pepper spray.

The union says officers need these weapons to protect themselves from dangerous dogs they encounter.

Dog control officers are allowed to carry batons, but fisheries officers are not. The union says its members are forced to use any instrument handy to defend themselves.

However, dog control groups say using pepper spray on dangerous dogs is likely to make the situation much worse.
