Trio rescued from snow cave on mountain

6:53 am on 19 July 2016

Three people were rescued from a mountain in the Nelson Lakes area yesterday evening after being found sheltering in a snow cave they built.

Two of them were suffering from mild hypothermia.

Searchers were sent to the area after a signal from an emergency locator beacon was picked up at about 5pm.

The signal was tracked to an area between West Sabine Hut and the Travers Saddle, and the rescued trio were flown by helicopter to Nelson.
