Ms Berrington, 62, hasn't been seen since Tuesday.

About 50 volunteers have been searching houses and properties in Ferguson Drive in Upper Hutt today, but have no found signs her.

Detective David Mason said the search had been exhaustive and had covered all the reasonably possible areas Ms Berrington could be.

Mr Mason said her family was hugely disappointed but grateful for the work of the searchers and the wider Upper Hutt community.

He said although the physical search had been suspended, the police would continue with a missing person investigation to try to find Ms Berrington.

Mr Mason said the police would still like to hear from anyone who thought they may have seen her, or had information that they thought could help.

Ms Berrington is 168 centimetres tall with short brown and grey hair and the police say she may be in an anxious state.
