Prisoner rehab group in Wellington to close

6:03 am on 21 April 2010

A prisoner rehabilitation group in Wellington is closing down less than a month after the Government stopped funding its head office.

The Government called the National Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Society an insolvent black hole, and is diverting the $2.5 million directly to its 17 regional societies.

The president of one society in Wellington, Paul Carey, says it is having to close because the Department of Corrections is offering only a six month contract instead of 12 months.

Mr Carey says that, along with financial strains, means it has had to pull out as it doesn't believe it can keep providing its current services.
