A body has been found in a flat that was extensively damaged by fire in the Christchurch suburb of Woolston.

The Rutherford Street flat had been thought to be vacant at the time of yesterday's early morning fire.

A police spokesperson said the body was found today by police and fire investigators during a scene examination, inside the self-contained flat at the rear of the property.

The investigation was focused on identifying the body and determining how the fire started, the spokesperson said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information or images should contact the police.
