The man charged with attacking and raping a woman runner in Whangarei has admitted his guilt.

Haydn Christy, 40 appeared in the Whangarei District Court yesterday, and pleaded guilty to multiple charges including abduction and sexual violation.

Christy ambushed the woman while she was on an early morning run on the Hatea Loop walkway at the Whangarei marina on 29 April.

He dragged her into his car, took her to his home, raped and assaulted her and dumped her on a city street.

Several thousand people turned out to march around the Loop in protest at the attack and the woman spent some time in hospital recovering.

Christy will be sentenced in September.
