Police said a 28 year old man had been driving his car in Lichfield Street yesterday afternoon when four people, including a person with a knife, approached it.

They said the group ordered the victim to get into the front passenger's seat then drove off.

He was assaulted a number of times, before he managed to jump out of the car to freedom.

A man aged 28, and three women aged 22, 19 and 15 were all arrested after police found the car about 4.30pm.

All four were set to face charges including aggravated robbery, kidnapping and theft.

Police asked anyone who had seen a black 2001 BMW sedan between 2pm and 4.30pm on State Highway 1 south of Whangarei.
