The attack happened about 1am on St Asaph Street between Colombo and Durham Streets.

Police said there was a fight between three alleged attackers, aged in their 20s, and the two brothers, which was broken up by security officers.

One of the victims was king-hit and was in hospital with a significant head injury, the police said.

The other man tried to help his brother and was left with facial fractures, they said.

The police said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack or saw a silver Subaru Legacy in the area.

One of the men sought was described as a stocky Caucasian about 172cm to 180cm tall with ginger or brown curly hair and wearing a light-coloured button-down shirt with dark pants and shoes.

The other two were thought to be Māori, one stocky and the other skinny, both wearing dark clothing.
