The body was found in a service lane off Thames' main road at about 7am.

Police were trying to establish who he was and how he died.

The man, found in the lane off Pollen Street, appeared to be middle-aged, police said.

Senior Sergeant Rodney Carpinter said the man's injuries were concerning and specialist staff were helping with the investigation.

He appealed for help from anyone who saw anything unusual or suspicious in the area off the service lane between Queen Street and Mary Street, or in the central Thames area overnight.

Two lanes which service businesses in the area were closed following the discovery.

Local businesses said the lane closures were not seriously disrupting activity in the central business district.
