A man who killed his stepfather with an axe has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.
Preston Rameka, 29, appeared at the High Court in Auckland on Thursday on a charge of murdering Terrance Finch at his Glen Innes home last year.
Mr Rameka will be detained indefinitely in a secure mental health facility where he has been held for several months.
Lawyer Jonathan Down said it was a very sad case. He says his client, who has schizophrenia, had previously had a close relationship with Mr Finch.
