Report expected to recommend alcohol tax increase

8:28 pm on 22 April 2010

A review by the Law Commission of alcohol laws is expected to recommend a substantial increase in excise duty.

The commission was asked by the previous Labour-led government to review the law governing the sale and supply of alcohol.

It received 2939 submissions through its public consultation process, and its final report is due to be tabled in Parliament next week.

Finance Minister Bill English says he understands the Law Commission's report will recommend an increase in alcohol excise tax.

He says the Government will deal with issues regarding excise duties as they arise.
