Auckland councils are already lining up to talk to the new government to make sure the region's interests continue to get a high priority.

Most have congratulated Prime Minister-elect John Key and are keen to talk to him as soon as possible.

Auckland City Mayor John Banks, a former National cabinet minister, says he wants a promise to overhaul the Resource Management Act fulfilled.

Waitakere City says it hopes many of the city's big projects will be given extra focus because they are in Mr Key's electorate.

Regional council chairman Mike Lee says he wants to get to work as soon as possible on fixing the region's transport problems.
