A rescue of 170 people from a chairlift that broke down at the Mt Hutt skifield today has been successful.

One of the six-seater chairs got stuck near the summit just before midday.
Ski area manager James McKenzie said everyone was safely evacuated in about an hour and medically assessed, and none showed signs of exposure.
He said it was not yet known what caused the chairlift to stop.
