Air NZ adds more flights to help stranded passengers

Air New Zealand has added two more flights as it continues to clear the backlog of passengers stranded due to the volcanic ash clouds over Europe.

An extra flight is operating on Friday from London to Auckland via Los Angeles in addition to two scheduled flights.

On Sunday, an extra flight will leave Auckland and stop in Hong Kong on its way to London. That, too, will be in addition to the airline's normal service on that route.

Air New Zealand says seats on existing scheduled flights to and from London are expected to be open again for general sale from the end of next week.

Air services in Europe resumed on Wednesday. The BBC reports about 80% of scheduled flights took place.

The first Air New Zealand flights from London landed in Auckland on Friday morning. Most passengers seemed relaxed about the delays, but some described Heathrow airport as still in chaos.

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland began erupting a week ago and but is no longer discharging ash into the atmosphere.

The Icelandic Met Office says the volcano is producing less ash and the plume is low.
