Preventive detention for man who sexually abused family

7:10 pm on 23 April 2010

A man who repeatedly sexually abused members of his extended family over more than 20 years has been sentenced to preventive detention by the High Court in Wellington.

Barry Matakatea, 51, was sentenced on a variety of charges including rape, sexual violation and several representative charges of indecent assault on a girl.

His first victim was four years old when he indecently touched her in 1979 and he raped her when she was 12.

Other charges included sexual violation of a boy, aged 10, and abuse of one of his earlier victim's daughters.

Justice Alan Mackenzie said that while Matakatea was remorseful, he was assessed as being at a high risk of reoffending and preventive detention needed to protect the community.
