Whangarei District Council has voted to cut the speed limit on three popular beaches from 100 km/h to 30 km/h.
The move follows complaints from the public and the death of a teenage girl who was hit by a motorbike on a Dargaville beach last year.
Whangarei deputy mayor Kahu Sutherland says the 30km/h kilometre limit will apply to Langs Beach, Bream Bay and Ohiwini Beach.
Police will have an officer on duty for six weeks during summer at Dargaville's Ripiro Beach - where Daisy Fernandez, 13, was killed last New Year's Eve.
