A man is to appear in court on eight charges including kidnapping and using a gun against police, following an incident in Northland a week ago.

Police said a 33-year-old man was to appear in Manukau District Court on Friday facing charges of using a firearm against police, kidnapping, impersonating a police officer and unlawfully taking a vehicle.

Joshua Kite is accused of shooting at officers in Whangarei, stealing a police car and then abandoning a second stolen car in Maungaturoto.

Police had been searching for him for nearly a week.

Earlier, police said Kite was found in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa after search warrants were carried out.
