MP's resignation wanted from city council

6:04 am on 11 April 2009

An Auckland City Councillor is calling for the resignation of a fellow councillor and National Party Member of Parliament, because he has missed 10 of the last 22 council meetings since the general election.

Leila Boyle from the Tamaki Maungakiekie ward, says Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga is letting ratepayers down with his poor attendance.

Ms Boyle says Mr Lotu-Iiga cannot attend council meetings while Parliament sits and that means people are not represented.

Mr Lotu-Iiga says he is not resigning, but will try to go to more meetings.

He says attending meetings is just one way to work ratepayers and he uses email and private meetings, too.
