This morning's incident started in North Canterbury and ended in the inner city Christchurch suburb of Woolston.

Police said it was believed a quadbike was stolen from a rural property near Amberley.

Later a green 4WD Nissan Patrol with an A-frame tow bar on the front was taken and seen driving erratically towards Christchurch.

Police said it went through roadworks at high speed and damaged fences, private property and a golf course. The vehicle was also seen driving through a river.

Officers are speaking to the driver of the vehicle.

Police are asking for sightings of the 4WD vehicle between 9am and 10am in the Canterbury area
