Chiefs player involved in car crash

Police in Waikato say they will decide if any charges will be laid against former All Black Sione Lauaki once blood-alcohol tests are available.

Lauaki, who plays for the Chiefs, was injured when his vehicle crashed on State Highway 1, near Huntly, about 4.20am on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was found sitting in the driver's seat in a semi-conscious state. Once revived, Lauaki complained of a sore arm and was taken to hospital.

Police have not named Lauaki, only refering to him as a professional rugby player.

However, the Chiefs confirmed that the player was Lauaki. It says alcohol was not involved and that he fell asleep at the wheel.

In March, Lauaki pleaded guilty to assaulting a man in a bar in a dispute over a drink. He was to undergo an anger management course before being sentenced on 5 May.

Police says an evidental blood test was taken at the hospital and has been sent for analysis.
