The contract for a new rugby stadium in Whangarei is to go to Auckland company Argon Construction.

Argon has been named as the preferred tenderer for the $16 million project, which will be funded by ratepayers.

Northland Regional Council says Argon had the edge in design-and-build experience, with projects including the Ericsson Stadium upgrade.

Chief executive Ken Paterson says Argon is committed to using local subcontractors as much as possible .
