Bieber mania prompts extra security

Security measures were stepped up so that fans of the Canadian teen pop singer Justin Bieber were kept safe during his brief visit to Auckland on Wednesday.

On Monday, at least 10 young girls were treated by paramedics in Sydney, following mass hysteria that forced the cancellation of a free concert.

Bieber's record label, Universal Music, says that his fans in New Zealand are just as intense as they are in Australia, but that his activities in this country would not produce the same big-crowd issues.

The label says that only private performances were scheduled in Auckland, and that extra security guards had been added to each location to ensure the safety of fans.
