The disappearance of Lucas Cochrane, who went missing on Saturday night, is completely out of character, say police.

The 19-year-old has not been seen since he left a function at the Whitianga Fire Station, just before midnight on Saturday.

More than 20 search and rescue volunteers and police were now looking for Mr Cochrane, who does not know the area well.

The search was focusing on the Whitianga township, in Coromandel, and the police have asked locals to check any properties and sections for sightings of him.

Mr Cochrane is decribed as European, 182cm tall and of medium build with short sandy-coloured hair.

He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and a black peaked cap.
