Slow progress on cockpit security upgrade

More than two years after the alleged hijacking of a passenger aircraft, flight deck security has been tightened on just one plane, official figures show.

Following the alleged hijacking of a flight from Blenheim to Christchurch in February 2008 the Government ordered the bolstering of cockpit doors - a cheaper option than screening more passengers.

Ministry of Transport information reveals that one aircraft in the Mount Cook fleet has been fitted with a strengthened cockpit door. Another 43 aircraft with 30 seats or more are yet to be upgraded.

The Pilots' Association says it would have liked to see the strengthened cockpit doors fitted earlier.

The ministry of says discussions about improving security on planes with 19 seats or more are still ongoing and no decisions have been made.
